Why folo can’t go “home” just yet
Okay, everybody, folo’s webmaster “riddenword” says we better stay right here at old folo through tomorrow, on the outside chance that Zach Scruggs enters a plea and early word of it gets us all hitting our Refresh buttons at the same rate we did Friday morning.
That, not massive new traffic (say 222,000 Scruggsianans all at once, hee), is what smoked the servers, he figures. Problem was, those poor dumb machines couldn’t tell us news-hungry upstanding ‘Murkans from Rooskie or Côte d’Ivoirian bogies launching a “distributed denial of service” attack. Possibly a mere couple thousand of us suddenly, furiously pecking away at our Skinner levers sufficed, within minutes, to reduce riddenword’s Dallas server-farm guy to a congealed salad of terror.
If we do that to him again the second business-day running . . . well, you can imagine. As riddenword explained to me, this chap “bears the cost of replacing the parts that will fail earlier because of the massive load we generated Friday, as well as the public relations cost of having dozens of servers fall into slow-mo as folo’s audience assaulted his bandwidth, not to mention the disruption of having his techs racing through the racks of servers furiously typing code and throwing switches to re-balance the bandwidth load. Picture a computer in a crowded office suddenly bursting into flames, and you’ll have an idea of what kind of panic ensued.”
Now according to riddenword, this guy’s accustomed to dealing with massive traffic — as long as the infrastructure is adequate (one of his clients runs 13 servers in parallel, each with 32 Gigabytes of installed RAM, reaching a mega-audience. Bet you can guess what he peddles. Well, be dang if we didn’t reach out and touch even him in the Philippines the other day!).
But what our dear riddenword runs is Dogstuff, the store in Austin whose own (pretty huge) server hosts folo.us directly. And he reports, “Looking toward the future, it’s apparent that folo has become the tail that - on occasion at least - is starting to wag the dogstuff. During the period that folo was deactivated, the dogstuff.com site (aka, my bread and butter) became vastly more responsive, developed a spring in its step, and started bounding like a young pup.”
So we gotta do something about this, and pretty pronto. But I don’t know of a way to do it for free. The server-farm guy says he needs a little over $600 a month to supply us equipment equal to folo’s needs (riddenword has checked around and thinks that’s a pretty good deal: “For comparison purposes, I understand that a site like Daily Kos has bandwidth charges in the range of $10,000 a month. For that investment, I think what he means is that the server might slow down and get balky at maximum load, but he won’t need to shut a site down as he did Friday.”)
You guys. I can’t afford $60 a month, let alone $600, to keep treating you to folo. Between my posting and emailing back-and-forth with sources, I’m trying to learn a little something about marketing (a whole new world for me) and how to make better use of folo’s ad-space — those pretty-dumb robots of Google’s can’t seem to figure out what interests y’all much, nor are NMC and I apparently too hot at guessing your interest in Amazon offerings. Though riddenword’s got a lead on someone who can help me do better internet marketing, basically, here’s the sitch:
folo is a garage startup now facing the decision of whether to rent office space or just potter out. Under twenty of y’all have hit the tip-jar since that went up last month (all as generous as possible, some quite beneficent, one shockingly so, and each deeply appreciated). While I think top-quality advertisers will be most interested in an audience like you, I can’t just snap my fingers and make them appear. So I don’t see how folo gets there from here without a LOT more sustenance from its readers than it’s had so far.
I assume some foloers are well-heeled but know many aren’t, so I can’t stand to make this a subscription-only site (shoot, I couldn’t afford to subscribe myself). But if we want to continue our community and keep its focus on what’s to come in Scruggsiana — in Mississippi and wherever else (cough *D.C.* cough) its tendrils run — well, do you expect to get your utilities and groceries and lawyering for free?
My dear, the stark fact is: if we’re to go on, folo badly needs your — and I do mean your — help.
lotus
Update:
Just to make one point clear - Lotus really isn’t asking for $600 a month, because the largest part of the server cost - about $350 a month - is and will remain dogstuff’s responsibility. We’ve been carrying folo along with our own traffic but y’all have finally reached the point where your growth is degrading our server’s performance.
Upgrading the server and allowing folo to continue to ride on our shoulders (but with adequate capacity) seems to be a cheaper alternative than setting up a stand-alone server wth enough capacity for folo, (and it avoids a substantial setup fee) but Lotus misunderstood - dogstuff would continue to pay the bulk of the server cost in order to maintain our business websites as well as continuing to cover the costs of periodic technical support by our contracted technician. You don’t need to carry any of our costs and we’ve been happy to host you - whether you meant to or not, y’all have created an amazing example of citizen journalism that is a model for what the Internet should be doing.

Come on folks–PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS!!
I guess in today’s world it should be “put your money where your fingers are”–but I think you get the jist.

Thanks, dear jim.

lotus, I fear some just do not grasp the value that is here. I go to folo before I visit my NYT,WSJ and other news links. It is all here and with the links involved the site is truly “windows to the world”.
March 16, 2008 at 8:49 am
jim, that’s exactly what I wanted it to be, so I’m delighted to hear that’s what it is for you. And even better than the “windows to the world” part, I love our community — the irreplaceable thing I thought I’d go nutso without for that hour or so Friday.
I know there must be a lot of folks we couldn’t get the word to about where to find us, and I can’t wait to get back in touch with them.

“But I don’t know of a way to do it for free”
One very good free option is Yahoo Groups. I have a couple I follow over there and they seem to work well with many features.
http://groups.yahoo.com/
March 16, 2008 at 9:34 am
Ooo, I’ll check that out, IAG — thanks!
March 16, 2008 at 9:44 am
IAG, do you have to “color inside the lines” of those Yahoo groups? Would we have to stick to one general topic and not go wandering off from, say, Southern scandal into, say, Southern food or culture?
March 16, 2008 at 9:48 am
And would I have to surrender comment-thread quality-control to Yahoo? (A deal-stopper, there.)
March 16, 2008 at 10:33 am
yo, could only drop a five spot on yall. Don’t get enough fo mo.
I too come hear before djournal, NYT (except they send me email updates), or google news.
Hope you guys can raise the money.
March 16, 2008 at 10:37 am
Your $5 sure does help though, dmw, so thank you!

Lotus, check your email
March 16, 2008 at 11:32 am
Do you have a mailing address? I seemed to have missed that. Or Paypal?
March 16, 2008 at 11:32 am
I actually prefer the WordPress site. It loads much better on my phone. But I do miss being able to edit comments.
March 16, 2008 at 11:41 am
Yep, Lurker , scroll up the right sidebar a bit. See that “Donate to Folo” link to my PayPal account? Thanks!
DN, the killah problem with this site is that it doesn’t allow ads. But it sure is wonderful to have as a backup, isn’t it?
March 16, 2008 at 11:56 am
It certainly is. I still can’t believe Folo fried a server. Do you have a recipe for that?
March 16, 2008 at 12:08 pm
DN, I keep trying to put a recipe together for you, but I’m scared I’ll get banned when I go to describe 1 of the ingredients LOL
March 16, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Lotus,
Somehow you got to get links to Amazon for all purchases. I am about to drop some sweet taters to upgrade my printer to pro level and my scanner for my photo ‘business’, which likely loses more than folo does in a month. But we do love our hobbies do we not??
I keep on telling my wife it is cheaper then Eliot’s hobbies, but just barely.
By the way I don’t really like sweet taters but I once had some sweet tater chips that put the best ‘real’ potato chips to shame- just cannot recall the brand. All the follow on chips were not up to snuff.
IANAL

Heh, George. If you can stand to wait ’til we get back to the new place, whatever you order from Amazon via there does bring me a little commission, whether it’s the pictured product or (an)other(s). So can you cross your legs and hop up and down for another day or two, luv?
Sweet-taters chips be RILL good, um-hm.
March 16, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Lotus,
I came to call that hopping thing the ‘pee- pee dance’ when my wife and I and 4 teen stepchildren briefly lived in a 1 bathroom house years ago. As per my usual Ive been putting it off for months, so a few more days will not burst the bladder.

NL/BB/George - I just checked out your website. SPECTACULAR WORK!
March 16, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Lotus:
“do you have to “color inside the lines” of those Yahoo groups?”
No, I am in one group that posts everything from investing, to politics to religion to music. Haven’t see much about food though
“would I have to surrender comment-thread quality-control to Yahoo?”
I have never administered a Yahoo Group but I know the admin can edit/delete comments, ban idiots etc.
A couple nice features I use that I noticed folo didn’t offer:
you can change the setting to have every post emailed.
every member can have an album to upload photos or other pics from the net (nice to have this from more Nature Lover pics)
Most of the other folo options are there such as links except you know Yahoo would get any click revenue. But it is free!
March 16, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Lotus, you’re right. Nature Lover’s pix are so spectacular that I put a link to them in the right sidebar. (Without even asking permission…sorry about that).
If you go there, foloers, be sure to click on the What’s New link, then the New Photo Album and click on the thumbnails of the Great Blue Heron Battle Royale to enlarge them - amazing!
March 16, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Thanks for the compliments. Only thing better for an amateur photog is sweet taters for a print. No problem with a link. I’m in my front yard in Pontytoc trying to catch some birdies before the sun sets. Putting the hide (blind ) up spooks em.
The battle royale was taken at the Venice rookery in Venice FL

Well, when you come on back in the house, Jawge, tell me if you’ve been down to Ding Darling (near Sanibel)? Great nature-photographers’ heb’n there, I promise you (bet you already know). Ever been to the Keys for the wonderful little dog-sized Key deer, and so much else?
March 16, 2008 at 10:17 pm
I have visited this site on many an occasion now but this post is the 1st one that I have ever commented on.
Congratulations on such a fine article and site I have found it very helpful and informative - I only wish that there were more out there like this one.
I never leave empty handed, sometimes I may even be a little disappointed that I may not agree with a post or reply that has been made. But hey! that is life and if every one agreed on the same thing what a boring old world we would live in.
Keep up the good work and cheers.

A little over the top with the color but this Southern Belle showed up at my feeder tonight when I posted above. http://www.housleyphoto.com/page29/page30/files/page30-1015-full.html
She has just the right hat for the season, color coordinated.
I have been to Ding Darling and have the T short to prove it. My 2 pelicans, the tricolor heron the cormorant eating and snowy egert all came from there. Have not made it to the Keys- have to

T Shirt aw heck T shorts sounds more intriguing

IAG @ 1:51: Ah well, if Yahoo gets all the click-through, that won’t work a-tall. See, our dispositive issue here is: “If lotus can’t come up with some take-home, she gonna lose-home.” In the alternative: “If folo can’t keep lotus going, lotus can’t keep folo going.” Ya see why no Yahoo, ergo?
Suzanne @ 10:17: Welcome and thank you, and I’m so glad you piped up. The more voices, the more fun we got!
NL @ 10:56: Aw, if Juanita were here, she’d be hollering, “Girl, I love your CHAPEAU!” (As for T-shorts, so is that what we call what all these tubby-tummied teeners are wearing now, sights that’d make my mama keel over gasping “Ye gods and li’l fishes!” on her way down?)
